UPND official exposes corrupt council activities

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

AN opposition leader is reportedly working with some council officials in UPND-led councils in Southern Province to shield rampant corrupt activities perpetrated by some councillors and other civic leaders, a senior party official has disclosed. The party official disclosed that some leaders had been holding “dark corner” meetings with top council officials in the said councils to shield all corrupt activities being committed by some chairpersons and councillors. The official who sought anonymity said the opposition leader was doing so for fear that if the dubious activities were exposed, the party would be labelled as being corrupt. But UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma refuted the allegations, saying that the plot was aimed at denting the names of the innocent people. Mr Kakoma asked the party official to give evidence on the alleged matter. He told the Daily Nation in a separate interview that it was unacceptable for party officials to accuse their party leaders. “That person who gave you the information about corruption activities in UPND led Councils is lying and those are just mere allegations. If the source is genuine and want to expose the corruption activities he must be able to disclose the names and not sort anonymity,” he said. The source disclosed that the named opposition leader and top council officials had agreed to shield the illegal land allocation involving the civic leaders.

The official said a named civic leader illegally allocated land to himself near Monze College which was earmarked for the construction of truck parking space which the council had resolved would be a source of revenue. The source said the civic leader had since allocated half the land to himself were he had built a bar and a modern restaurant. The party official doubted if the opposition leader could fight corruption once he formed government. The source appealed to the Minister of Local Government Vincent Mwale to investigate the matter so that civic leader can be brought to book. He also urged the minister to fire the top council officials for covering up corrupt activities at the said council. And Patriotic Front Lusaka Province secretary Kennedy Kamba called the Local Government Service Commission to take keen interest on the matter. Mr Kamba said that the revelations could be true especially that it had been exposed by UPND official. He said that it would be important that the matter was thoroughly investigated in order to bring to book the culprits.
