Honour Chiluba, govt urged

- By BENNIE MUNDANDO and MOSES SINJWALA

The idea of always demonizing former presidents is detrimental to a mature democratic society, unless absolutely necessary legally for abuses, not mere selective witch-hunting,” - Dr Shimunza

THE immunity of late president Dr Fredrick Chiluba should be lifted and restored to him post-humously, Lusaka based lawyer Hobday Kabwe has said.

Mr Kabwe explained that Dr Chiluba was acquitted of all charges which meant that he was innocent and a free man.

He told the Daily Nation it was right that his immunity was restored post-humously with all his belongings.

Mr Kabwe said that the constitution of Zambia found the late president innocent, therefore he should be celebrated as an innocent man and champion of democracy in Zambia.

Mr Kabwe said that it was sad some people continued to demean the image and legacy of the late president which was unfair and should not be allowed.

“The presumption that is in the mind of people needs to be rectified because the late president was found innocent by the courts, which means according to the constitution of Zambia he was a free man and his immunity and status need to be restore but post- humously,” he said.

Last week, the FJT memorial organising committee called for the recognition of the legacy and respect for the former Head of State. Organising committee chairman Chapa Chikamba said Zambians needed to get rid of the “wrongful and dramatised impression” of Dr Chiluba because he did a lot for the country, including democratising the country.

And Movement for National Transformation (MNT) leader Daniel Mvula Shimunza has said Dr Chiluba, must be honoured, as a deserving and befitting leader of this nation who left an indelible mark on the political development and democracy of Zambia,.

Speaking ahead of the eigth memorial service of Dr. Chiluba, Dr. Shimunza yesterday, Dr Shimunza said Governmnet must put premium and prioritization on honoring his legacy, his wishes for his children, and family. He also said honouring Dr. Chiluba’s legacy extended to giving back to the family, what was restored to him by the courts legally, as a champion of conservative liberal Christian democracy.

development, and democracy of Zambia. We therefore, urge government, to put premium, and prioritization on honoring his; legacy, and his wishes for his children, and Family in all, including what was restored to him by the courts legally, as a villiant champion of conservative liberal Christian democracy. “The idea of always demonizing former presidents is detrimental to a mature democratic society, unless absolutely necessary legally for abuses, not mere selective witch-hunting,” Dr. Shimunza said.

He said Zambia must feel indebted to Dr. Chiluba for introducing a liberal economic system from socialism that had crippled the country economically. He said Zambians is competitively advantaged, to engage the value of a much-needed reformed capitalism because of the foundation laid by Dr. Chiluba.
