Chilanga’s aquaculture sector
Dear Editor,
THE overwhelming interest the residents of Chilanga have shown in the government aquaculture loans in Chilanga Constituency is an indication that Zambians are thirsting for empowerment so they are self-reliant. It is encouraging that the district council has received 400 applications from the local people on behalf of the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) for fish farming. Chilanga Member of Parliament Maria Langa deserves commendation for the massive sensitisation she and her team have been conducting around the constituency to raise public awareness of the loans. The government has come up with such initiatives to build the capacity of ordinary citizens to engage in income generation instead of depending on the government. Recently Ms Langa organised training for scores of her constituents in fish farming. Participants in the training included youths, women and people living with disabilities. This is what people should expect from their MPs.

Madam Langa was heard on ZNBC TV appealing to the government to ensure that the application process was simplified to avoid disadvantaging deserving applicants for technical reasons. She said the people of Chilanga might not know how to complete the complicated application forms but they knew how to engage in farming like the back of their hands. It was encouraging to hear her declaring that after fish farming the next training would be poultry and livestock rearing. Zambians are not as lazy as some people claim but only lack the capacity in form of knowledge and start-up capital JAMES CHANDA, Lusaka.
