Govt tackles hunger in Chongwe
GOVERNMENT has dispatched 30 tonnes of relief food to Chongwe where hunger is wreaking havoc, District Commissioner Robster Mwanza has said. Mr Mwanza said the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) had patched the maize to cushion the hunger situation. The prolonged drought experienced in the district had negatively affected the yield, Mr Mwanza said. “There a serious drought here in Chongwe, this situation has left the district in disarray. The drought had intensively affected the yield. “As I speak right now many households have been hit by severe hunger. Government through the Food Reserve Agency has come to our aid, at least about 30 tonnes of maize has been delivered. “I can simply say that this consignment is a big relief to us the people of Chongwe because many households will benefit. We just hope the area will receive normal rainfall this year,” Mr Mwanza said. Mr Mwanza said many people were dependant on agriculture and drought conditions posed a serious crisis to many households. Meanwhile, Mr. Mwanza has bemoaned the continued stock theft in the area. Mr Mwanza said the situation was a source of concern to the district administration and especially farmers in particular as it was their source of revenue. He said livestock theft had reached at alarming levels and urged security wings to intensify patrols to curb the situation. Mr Mwanza said those who be found wanting would face the wrath of the law to deter would-be offenders.
