POS MACHINES FOR PARKING TO CURB THEFTS

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

MOTORISTS have commended Lusaka City Council for equipping parking attendants along Cairo Road with Point of Sell (PoS) machines.

Mr Francis Mwamba, a motorist, said the move which was aimed at enhancing accountability of parking fees, would make the local authority realise more revenue especially from parking fees.

Mr Mwamba said the local authority was making a lot of money through parking spaces, but the money was not receipted and there was no proper accountability.

Another motorist Mr Edward Mwanje said some car parking attendants never issued receipts each time he paid for a parking space.

Mr Mwanje said at times he was given fake receipts and hence the move would reduce stealing by car park attendants.

“It’s a progressive move because some attendants were issuing fake receipts to customers and this will also bring accountability and increase revenue for the council,” said Mr Mwanje.

On Monday Lusaka City Council announced that it had equipped parking attendants along Cairo Road with Point of Sell (PoS) machines.

And LCC public relations manager George Sichimba explained though motorists would continue to pay cash to parking attendants, receipts will now be generated by PoS machines and not manually.

Mr Sichimba said motorists parking along Cairo Road and Shoprite Car Park should from now demand PoS generated receipts when they pay for parking space.

He said Cairo Road and Shoprite Car Park have been targeted first because of the high turnover of parking.

Mr Sichimba said the project would eventually be rolled out to the entire Central Business District.
