Cancel 2 plots, recommends committee

- By ROGERS KALERO

THE planning committee of the Kitwe City Council (KCC) has recommended the cancellation of two plots which were not properly given out by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

KCC has, however, allowed the developers who are putting up structures near the Mawlaik Barracks to continue with their construction works because the land does not belong to the Zambia Army.

The planning committee recommended the cancellation of the plots on Chibuluma road opposite the Kitwe fire brigade and the one on Mama Monty Primary School in Chimwemwe Township.

Town Clerk Mbulo Seke said in an interview the recommendation to cancel the plots came after a meeting between the developers and the local authority following complaints from Nkana Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) and the school management.

In the case of Chibuluma road plots, Mr Seke said NWSC complained to the local authority that the plots were given to developers on a land where the water pipes for the water utility passed.

At Mama Monty Primary School, management complained about the structures which were being built on the school’s land, which was public property.

“So after receiving the complaints from NWSC and the school management, we met the developers from the two areas and we recommended that their plots be cancelled because they were not properly given.

“For Chibuluma road plots, that is the land where water pipes for NWSC pass, while for Mama Monty land, that is public land and no one can be given a plot on public land,’’ Mr Seke said.

After the meeting with the developers, they appreciated the position of the council and pledged to cooperate because the local authority had engaged them on the matter.

Mr Seke said the council would only move to demolish the structures if the developers resisted the council’s decision.

“The council will only move to demolish those structures if the developers are resisting the council’s decision on the matter, but if they are not resisting, they will demolish themselves,’’ Mr Seke said
