Noisy bars annoy Mtendere residents

- By MOSES SINJWALA

SOME night clubs and bars have continued operating beyond stipulated hours especially in Lusaka’s Mtendere area despite many warnings, from the Lusaka city council, says one of the residents Mr Mike Tembo in an interview said early this year the local authority cautioned night clubs against operating beyond the stipulated hours but nothing had charged.

He said noise pollution emanating from the surrounding night clubs was an inconvenience needed to be checked.

Another resident, Ketrus Hakasande, noted that bars and night clubs were a nuisance to the residents due to noise pollution.

Ms Hakasande called on the local authority to close down illegal bars and those operating beyond stipulated hours. “Bars should not operate in residential areas, near schools and churches. This is because they create an imbalance whereby children are unable to study and there is no peace in the neighborhood, therefore LCC should quickly move in and close the bars ,” said Ms Hakasande.

Another resident Mr Mambwe Chanda said the situation was very unfortunate and needed quick intervention from both the local authority and the police.

Mr Chanda said bars were open as early as 05:00 hours and closing beyond stipulated hours.

He said under-age drinking was also on increase and called on the local authority to quickly move in and arrest the situation. “The council together with State police should raid Mtendere bars and illegal night clubs and conduct random operations because people were operating bars at their own free time without following the laid down procedure,” said Mr Chanda.
