NOISE POLLUTION CHOKES SIAVONGA

- By OLIVER SAMBOKO

RESIDENTS have called on the Siavonga District Council to act on the noise pollution caused by loud music from a named local night club. A concerned resident, Ladicious Hanziba, who spoke on behalf of others said the local authority should urgently address the issue considering that the night club was situated near Zesco Compound where engineers live.

"People can't sleep at night because of the noise coming from the night club. Some of these people are managing machines at our power station and they need to concentrate at work. Others are health personnel and equally need enough and sound sleep for them to do their work effectively," Mr Hanziba said.

He said the local authority should ensure owners of the club installed sound proof at their premises to stop noise from disturbing the residents residing near the night club and the sounding areas.

Mr Hanziba said according to a bylaw, night clubs or any other drinking place should have good sound proof and wondered why the local authority was not

acting on those that were abrogating regulations.

"It's sad that these clubs are being allowed to play loud music as late as 05:00 hours in the morning and the poor people around this place are subjected to this without anyone coming to help them," he said.

Another resident, Rodgers Mweene, appealed to the local authority to regulate noise from churches operating in residential areas.

Mr Mweene said while it was appropriated that Zambia was a Christian nation, there should be order in the manner worship was conducted in some of the churches especially those that operate within residential areas.
