No foreign matter in Legana sausage - LCC

- By MOSES SINJWALA

THE Department of health has found no evidence of foreign matter from the Legana Hungarian Sausage sample submitted for analysis, Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations manager George Sichimba has said.

Mr Sichimba said a public health analyst from the Department of Public Health found no evidence of foreign matter identified while, the casing was identified as a food grade casing. This follows a complaint submitted to the Department of Health by Mr Erick Ng’andu that he found a ‘condom’ like foreign matter in the alleged Legana sausage on August 7, 2019.

Mr Sichimba said the council collected the sample from the complainant and took it to the Food and Drugs Laboratory for foreign matter and food grade casing identification analysis. Mr Sichimba said the result from the analysis found that there was no evidence of any foreign matter.

He said after the analysis was done, the results were communicated to the complainant that there was no evidence of foreign matter identified and the casing was identified as a food grade casing.

“The process was taken in line with the Food and Drugs Act Cap 303 Section 3(b) which stipulates that any person who sells any food that consist in whole or in part any filthy, putrid, rotten, decomposed, or diseased substances, foreign matter or is otherwise unfit for human consumption, or is adulterated shall be guilty of an offence,” he said.

Mr Sichimba said the process required that laboratory analysis was conducted before making a conclusion.

“This is the more reason why LCC took its time to issue a statement on the matter. Assertions by some sections of society that we did not take action are therefore not true,” he said.
