18 HOUSES GUTTED IN MONGU

A FIRE has left 18 families homeless and destroyed property worth thousands of Kwacha in Tapo area of Mongu.

The fire gutted the houses last Wednesday around 14:00 hours in Likundu Village.

According to witnesses a strong wind blew flames from a fire left burning by one of the families at one of the houses after preparing food.

The flames then spread to the other houses.

The inferno burnt property, including K1,200 cash, blankets, clothes, mealie meal, dried fish, cell phones, kitchen and utensils worth thousands of kwacha and important documents like national registrati­on cards (NRCs).

Likundu Village chairperso­n Ngola Kamota reported the accident to the Mongu district administra­tion.

And the Office of the Vice President, through the Mongu District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC), has supplied 36 bags of mealie meal each weighing 12.5kg to the 18 affected households.

Mongu district administra­tive officer Ernest Mwanang’ombe, who was accompanie­d by district community developmen­t officrer Silumesi Sitali, took the mealie meal consignmen­t for distributi­on to the affected families on behalf of Government.

Mr Mwanang’ombe told the affected families that after receiving the report of the inferno the district administra­tion quickly moved in.

He said President Lungu’s government would not relent tin coming to the aid of people affected by such disasters.

Liyala Kabeto, one of the victims, thanked Government on behalf of the affected families for quickly coming to their aid.
