Prayer is a unifying factor - Mayor

- By JOHN KOMBE and KETRA KALUNGA

PRAYER is a powerful force that breaks through all divides, Chongwe Mayor, Mr. Geoffrey Chumbwe has said.

Mr. Chumbwe made the remarks in an interview during the day of national prayer, fasting and reconciliation held at Chongwe Secondary School.

The event was attended by the district commissioner, Mr. Robster Mwanza, heads of government departments, men and women in uniform, church leaders and residents who turned up in hundreds to observe the national day of prayer.

Mr. Chumbwe observed that the day was a time of reflection and for citizens to make peace with one another.

He said prayer was one way of strengthening the unity and peace that Zambia is known for and thanked residents who took time to join in the event.

And United Church of Zambia (UCZ) reverend, Daniel Chisenga said it was time for Zambia to regain the unity for which it was known for.

Rev. Chisenga said it was sad word “We” which depicts unity has been lost in the country and had now been replaced by “I”

The clergyman said it would therefore hard to reconcile with other with the word “I” constantly on people’s lips.

Rev. Chisenga said in his homily, the country needed to cultivate the culture of “We” instead of “I” because reconciliation was beyond an individual.

He was speaking in Kabwe during the commemorations of the National Day of Prayer and Fasting under the theme “Receiving Times of Refreshing from the Presence of the Lord through Reconciliation with the Environment for a Prosperous Zambia.”

And Rev. Chisenga said the National Day of Prayer and Fasting has not started today but began way back in 1963 when the First Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, gathered with his fellow politicians and the church to pray for the nation.
