- By MICHAEL MIYOBA

IT was a successful night for Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions boxers Catherine Phiri and Alfred Muwowo who triumphed via knock outs during Saturday night’s international boxing tournament which featured boxers from Tanzania.

Phiri, a former WBC champion knocked out Tanzania’s Flora Machera in the third round of a ten-round non-title bout at Government Complex in Lusaka.

Phiri who took a few punches in the second round decided to take the fight seriously in the third round where she knocked down the Tanzanian twice before the referee called off the fight.

The fight watched by Lusaka Province minister, Bowman Lusambo who was the guest of honour redeemed Catherine Phiri from her WBC Super Bantamweight championship defeat to Kenya’s Fatuma Zarika on March 23, 2019.

Meanwhile, “prodigal son” Alfred Muwowo returned to the ring for the first time this year and knocked out another Tanzanian Fundi Juma in the first round of a non-title fight.

The knock outs excited Oriental Quarries promotions manager, Christopher Malunga who hailed his boxers for putting up “great” fights.

“I salute my boxers, they have done extremely well. There are small areas where we need to improve but all in all they performed well to make sure that they don’t dent their records and now even their ratings will improve,” Malunga said.

Meanwhile Phiri said her victory motivated her going into her next fight which will be a WBC title fight with the winner between Kenya’s Fatuma Zarika and Yamileth Makado who are set to clash on November 9 in Mexico.

In other fights, Remmy Simbeye from Oriental Quarries defeated Joseph Chewe in an eight-round lightweight fight while David Mwale overcame Phirimon Hara from Evergreen Boxing Academy in a six-round Bantamweight contest.

Intercity Boxing Academy’s Bernard Mwanga beat Mubelela Mukuni from Oriental Boxing Academy while Inter City’s female boxer Catherine Mulyata beat her club-mate Naomi Mwaba in a welterweight six-round fight.
