Kalumbila residents assured of clean water

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

WATER is a basic need and that government believes that access to safe and clean water is the number one priority for community development, North-western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has said.

Mr Mubukwanu stated that government remained committed to improving the lives of its people through implementation of improvement programmes that include ensuring people had access to clean and safe drinking water.

‘’And we have placed priority on ensuring that we deal with all obstacles that are hindering government’s development agenda, which is providing inclusive sustainable development to our people,’’ he said.

He was speaking when he officiated at the handing over of the water project in Musele community being undertaken by Kalumbila Minerals limited on Saturday.

Mr Mubukwanu said the project showed the mining firm’s commitment to bringing fresh clean water to local communities in its area of operations in Kalumbila district.

He said government was aware of the huge investments Kalumbila Minerals had made in communities where it operates in terms of health programmes, construction of education and health infrastructure and conservation farming, among others.

He said the mining company had to date spent over US$ 100 million on sustainable and community development programmes whose main objective is to improve the quality of life of its employees, their families and their immediate communities.

‘’And as government, we will strive to provide a favourable business environment which can lead to a win-win situation for both investors and local people,’’ he said.

He however advised the company to continue working with relevant stakeholders in exploring initiatives that are going to help improve the livelihoods of the people.

And Kalumbila Minerals limited general manager Morris Rowe said the water project was ongoing and would be replicated in all communities within Musele chiefdom.

He disclosed that each project would have a distribution network of 10 water points.
