INTERXITY BOXERS BAG FIRST CONTINENTAL TITLES
INTERXITY Boxing Academy bagged its first continental titles on Saturday evening as two of its Boxers were crowned World Professional Boxing (WPBC) continental champions.
Female Boxer Catherine Mulyata defeated Zimbabwe’s Emily Kubwalo via a technical Knockout in round three of the fight to be crowned champion which also saw the boxer winning K10,000 prize money.
While Bernard Mwango overcame Tanzania’s Juma Fundi who he too knocked out to the ground to be crowned WPBF continental champion and also pocketing K12,000 prize money .
And Sports Minister Emmanuel Mulenga applauded the Zambian boxers for having won the nation some continental titles.
Mulenga said Government was committed to supporting boxing because of the massive talent that the sport had continued to exhibit.
The minister paid glowing tribute to the boxing academy for having groomed boxers out of the streets to becoming champions.
“We have witnessed massive talent and for that our ministry supports boxing because of the talent that is being exhibited,” Mulenga said.
And Mulyata said she owed her victory to her trainers for the efforts they put in preparations.
“She’s a tough opponent but was no match for me, because I had prepared so hard for this fight and all credit goes to my trainers for having put in so much effort in pushing us to train hard,” a Jubilant Mulyata said.
“Now that I’ve won this title my next aim is to obviously go for the World title.
And Boxing Promoter Eddie Gowa said his academy would now be challenging the World title having already been crowned continental champions.
In other supporting bouts Hillary Kataya defeated Oriental Quarries boxer Moombe Mukuni while Josam Banda beat Francis Zulu.
The boxing fight was themed Kick out HIV/AIDS and was hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
