Assess mobile services quality, ZICTA told
TRANSPORT and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya says there is need to assess the quality of mobile service provision in the country.
The minister said this when he met Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) management before meeting the organisation’s staff at ZICTA head office in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Kafwaya said mobile service consumers need to appreciate the service they were paying for.
He observed the need to aggressively fight ‘fake news’ in the country because this had negative impact on national development.
“I can see clearly that we have done a lot but we can still do more. Some of the work has to be done here and some has to be done elsewhere. Let me assure you that I am available for any support that you may require.
“The importance of this institution cannot be overemphasized. You regulate an environment that drives the economy,” he said.
Mr. Kafwaya, said this was the more reason why information shared on the cyber space was credible as this can have an impact on social and economic development.
“If we let loose the cyber environment where anyone can say anything, we will be creating a situation where society cannot develop. The decisions that people make cannot be based on fake news,” he said.
Meanwhile, the minister has observed the need to strengthen policy framework in the development of the telecommunication sector.
Mr. Kafwaya said he was within the 90 days provided for in the law to appoint a new board after he dissolved the previous one.
Mr. Kafwaya on November 25 2019 dissolved the Zanbia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) board of directors and that of ZAMPOST.
