ZRA WORKERS JOIN CLIMATE CHANGE FIGHT
CUSTOMS officers from the Zambia Revenue Authority on Friday took a break from collecting revenue to join stakeholders fighting effects of climate change by planting trees at Chilenje local court.
With ZRA commemorating the Customs Day which falls on January 26 every year, the authority decided to plant trees at the Chilenje local court as a way of curbing the effects of climate change. ZRA acting commissioner general Moses Shuko said global warming was real and that its effects were being felt. He said citizens should play an active role to protect and make the environment a better place to live in. He said trees were not only important to fight climate change but they also saved as a filter that removed harmful particles in the air. Mr Shuko urged all Zambians to plant trees to save the planet from global warming. And Lusaka City deputy mayor Christopher Shakafuswa has commended ZRA for its efforts in contributing towards the council’s efforts in fighting climate change. Mr Shakafuswa said tree planting was an important component of making Zambia clean, green and healthy and stressed the necessity to continue fighting climate change. “In 2005 the local authority procured 500 trees to be planted in Lusaka, and so far 900 trees have been planted throughout the city,” he said. Mr Shakafuswa commended the Commissioner General on his decision to commemorate World Customs Day by planting trees, stating that it is a well thought out move.
