Libuyu Bridge submerged

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

RESIDENTS of Libuyu Township in Livingstone on Monday morning woke up to a rude shock after discovering that the only bridge that connects them to the rest of the district was submerged.

All the residents, including school going children and traders could not cross the Mulamba stream because of the submerged bridge.

A check by the Daily Nation found residents and motorists stranded on both sides of the stream.

One of the residents of Maramba whose children attend school in Libuyu wondered why the situation had taken long to be addressed.

Mr Martin Kalembwe said the bridge had always been a topical issue during elections but once people were voted into office, they would not fulfil their promises.

Mr Kalembwe said that children were the most affected because they would end up missing lessons.

For a very long time now, the Libuyu Bridge has been a source of concern for the people in the area.

Residents had been making calls to both Government and the Livingstone City Council to work on the Link connecting the two areas.

During a public forum held in Libuyu last year organized by Planned Governance Network (PGN), the council's engineering department indicated that K 4million was required to put up a new bridge.

Further, the council stated that the Bill of Quantity was submitted to the Road Development Agency (RDA) for consideration as the bridge was under the agency and not the local authority.
