Clubs to decide Wildcat PFL fate
WILDCAT Premier Futsal League (PFL) clubs will meet to decide the fate of the league, PFL chairman Tarak Mehta has said. Mehta said the league which was suspended after the government implemented a ban on contact sports to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic would resume or end prematurely after the meeting with the clubs. The PFL meeting is set for today at the PFL headquarters in Lusaka. Mehta said if it’s to resume, the league will have to wait for proper guidelines from the government which is the biggest stakeholder in promoting the growth of futsal in Zambia. He said the Wildcat PFL will also have to come up with strict measures aimed at promoting the players’ safety if the league is to resume. “The Wildcat PFL remains suspended for now and this is in conformity to the directives from government which banned all contact sports. “We are committed to supplementing government’s efforts to stop the spread of the pandemic and that is why our league remains suspended until such a time when it will allow contact sports to return,” Mehta said. He is however comforted that the PFL will return after the return of contact sports in various African and European countries. Mehta reaffirmed PFL’s commitment to continue developing futsal as a sport which is loved by youths from different social backgrounds. Meanwhile, PFL defending champions, Automotive FC coach Andrea Christoforetti is hopeful that the PFL will bounce back soon following the anticipated new guidelines from government. “For now I can’t state how the league is going to end that is why we are meeting with the management of the PFL to decide the way forward. Clubs will have to give their view concerning what should happen,” Christoforetti said. Automotive dominate the 2019/2020 15-team Wildcat PFL table with 64 points, nine points ahead of second placed Alliance Inter who are on 55 points after 24 rounds of matches.
