Repair Chama link roads, State urged

- By PETER SICHALI

GOVERNMENT should quickly work on the Chama- Matumbo and Chama-Lundazi roads, an aspiring candidate for Chama North Constituency in next year’s elections Yotam Mtayachalo has said.

Mr Mtayachalo said it was sad that works on the projects had not commenced and the rainy season was about to start.

“We are remaining with only one month before the onset of the rainy season but nothing is happening on the two projects which means 2020 is most likely to be another lost opportunity for the government to honour its campaign promises of 2016,” Mr Mtayachalo said.

Mr Mtayachalo said the construction of the long-awaited Kamphemba bridge on the Chama-Matumbo road should commence because Chama could be cut off from Chinsali the provincial headquarters of Muchinga Province when the rains start.

He said the Lundazi-Chipata road was also a source of grave concern because the local contractor, Jonda Contractors, has dug out most of the bridges on the road near Chipata.

The contractor, Mr Mtayachalo said, had created so many detours and as such it was feared that he may not be able to construct new bridges to replace the old ones.

“I am wondering why the Road Development Agency and provincial authorities in Chipata have allowed such a situation to happen without advising the contractor to work on the new bridges in phases to replace the old ones.

“In a nutshell, I feel there is a pending crisis on that road if nothing is done urgently to forestall it,” Mr Mtayachalo said.

In an interview, Dr Ng’oma said foreign nationals like Prof Lumumba must respect the sanctity of the multi-party politics and sovereignty of Zambia.

He was reacting to remarks by Prof Lumumba that it was high time Zambians tried UPND president Hakainde Hichilema in the 2021 general elections and get rid of the PF regime under President Edgar Lungu.
