Former Kabwe Council directors jailed

TWO former directors and a chief accountant at Kabwe Municipal Council have been jailed for corruption involving K260, 000.

Victoria Mwanaumo 56, a former Director of Administra­tion of High Ridge Township, Daniel Mapulanga , 46, a former Director Planning of Housing and Edina Mwenya Sakala ,47, a former Chief Accounting Officer will serve five months in jail.

The three have been convicted by Kabwe Magistrate Court after they were arrested in 2014 by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC public relations manager, Timothy Moono, the three were sentenced to five months simple imprisonme­nt for corruption involving K260, 000.

“They were jointly charged with two counts of Abuse of Authority of Office contrary to section 99(1) of the Penal Code Cap 88 of the Laws of Zambia,” Mr Moono said.

In the first count, he said, the three between 1st January, 2011 and 1st January, 2012 abused their respective offices by irregularl­y approving payments amounting to K80, 000.00 to Kechas General Dealers for the roofing of Kasanda Market.

“In the second count, the trio approved payments amounting to K180, 000.00 for the purchase of a motor vehicle KB2 for the Office of the Town Clerk without following laid down procedure,” he said. Kasama- based Magistrate Chimuka Mutafela who presided over the matter acquitted the trio of the second count but convicted them on the first one.

Mr Moono said the convicts have since commenced serving the sentence with effect from October 22, this year.
