ECZ URGED TO ENHANCE SECURITY IN CENTRES
THEElectoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) needs to improve security in voter registration centres which operate at night, the opposition Leadership Movement (LM) has said.
LM media director, Tatila Tatila, said registration officers as well as prospective voters required maximum security in the night.
"When people show up to register in the night they need to be protected. What we have seen is that the centres where operating hours have been extended, there is only one police officer. This is dangerous, so the commission should do something concerning security," Mr Tatila said.
Mr Tatila said the decision by ECZ to adjust operation hours in some registration centres would enhance the process of capturing voters.
"This is good because people have been asking for this since the Commission started the exercise,” he added.
Mr Tatila said in an interview yesterday that even in other communities, operating hours should be adjusted because many people want to obtain voter's cards.
"There are many people in these communities so the Commission should consider doing what has been done in these other centres," he said.
Meanwhile, the opposition LM iss concerned with the way ECZ officers were shifting registration centres especially in Kanyama area.
Mr Tatila said shifting of the registration centres was confusing people and this would negatively impact the exercise in Kanyama.
