KITWE ROAD REHAB TO RESUME
THE stretch from Central Street in Nkana West through Mindolo Road and Chibuluma Road up to the Fire Brigade in industrial area has been earmarked for rehabilitation works after the rainy season, Kitwe Town Clerk Mbulo Seke has said.
Mr Seke said the road rehabilitation works, which would be done by AVIC International was part of the 15kilometres contract variation.
Mr Seke said the exercise would have commenced and completed a long time ago, but was halted because of the rains.
"As you know road rehabilitation works in the rain season cannot be done properly and this is why we could not embark on a project to rehabilitate the Central Street up to Chibuluma road.
"So once the rains stop, that loop is earmarked for rehabilitation," Mr Seke said.
He said while waiting for the rains to stop, the local authority was patching up some potholes in some roads after getting feedback over the bad state of the roads in the city.
The Town Clerk said the local authority has done some patching up of potholes near the Kitwe Teaching Hospital and on some roads in the city centre.
"Like I said serious road rehabilitation cannot be done in the rain season, but as a local authority, we are doing some emergency pothole patching to ease the challenges of motorists as they drive through some of the roads," he said
Mr Seke said the local authority has applied for road funds from the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) to do some rehabilitation in various parts of the city.
He said he was grateful that some motorists were communicating with the local authority on the poor state of the roads.
"As a local authority, we serve the public at grass root level and this is why we need to cultivate a good communication with the people so that they give us a feedback on various issues.
"In area of road rehabilitation, motorists have been communicating with us, how we should work together in the interest of the city and its people. They inform us, which roads have potholes which need urgent attention. Those which cannot wait for the rain season to finish. I am sure you have seen the local authority fixing certain potholes in the city," he said.
