Kitwe City Square ‘littered’

- By ROGERS KALERO

THECity Square in Kitwe is slowly being turned into a dumpsite by the public who are throwing litter after after eating their food from restaurants within the city centre

Following Government's decision to allow restaurants to only operate on take away basis, some people are using the City Square, as eating place and end up littering the area.

A check by the Daily Nation found a litter comprising used packs and carrier bags thrown all over while groups of people enjoyed their food.

Kitwe Town Clerk, Mbulo Seke, said the local authority would send council police officers to the City Square to stop people from eating from the place and throwing litter anyhow.

"People are doing all sorts of things to circumvent the Ministry of Health COVID 19 preventive guidelines and those who are eating from City Square also doing the same. As a local authority, we will try our best to ensure that people observe the guidelines

"So, for those eating food from City Square and littering the place, we will send council police officers to stop them from eating from that place and throwing litter anyhow,'' Mr Seke said.

Mr Seke said the Ministry of Health guidelines on the prevention of the Covid-19 was not a punishment for anybody, but was aimed at stopping the spread of the deadly pandemic.

And Kitwe District Commissioner, Chileshe Bweupe, said he was worried at the high levels of non-compliance by the public.

Mr Bweupe said it was sad that people were behaving as if it was business as usual despite the devastating effects of the pandemic on human life and economy.
