HH WARNS ENVOYS
He said diplomats like partying and going out to dinners but people should remember why they have been appointed.
He warned that he would be watching and warned the Permanent Secretaries at Foreign Affairs to stop squabbling and monitor what is happening in the foreign missions.
The President said this yesterday when he swore in five ambassadors and high commissions who included Panji Kaunda (Malawi), Eunice Tembo (UN/Geneva), Steven Katuka (Namibia), Danken Mulima (Saudi Arabia) and Paulo Osita (DRC).
He said those appointed had been carefully selected and should know and understand better what this means.
He cautioned against working in isolation or spending too much time on unimportant things. “Before you go for four parties, please remember what is important.”
The President also warned against squabbling in ministries and urged everyone to ensure that the job is done.
He urged the Foreign Affairs to monitor the foreign service so that the country’s interests are advanced.
He pointed out that in one embassy, the leader of the mission has been dividing the workers, “please take care of that.”
“You are working to accelerate economic development. Ask yourself how many economic opportunities I am creating for my country. You are the marketing officer for your country,” he advised.
He said Saudi Arabia, provides an opportunity for the country to sell food there. “Mr Mulima understands the culture and speaks the language, and that’s why he is going there.”
“Going to Geneva is no time to be concerned with buying perfumes for nieces and nephews. They can buy those online.
“We want economic diplomacy. Trade opportunities. That’s what we want,” the President said.
