IMF deal would not be complete by June, says Kabimba

- By NATION REPORTER

GOVERNMENT should stop this rhetoric that the International Monertary Funds (IMF) package will come to fruition by June because they have been in office for the last eight months without seeing any tangible results, Economic Front President, Wynter Kabimba, has said.

He said he doubted that the IMF package would be completed by June looking at the way things were going at the moment.

Mr Kabimba also said that there was nothing special with the restructuring of the country’s debt because it did not mean it would be cancelled and that the money would be paid at some point.

He said that the IMF package despite the UPND being in office for the last eight months was nowhere to be seen which has raised great concern amongst the people.

Mr Kabimba said the UPND government was making it seem as if restructuring of debt was writing off debt which was not the case.

“They are putting it as if only them have done it before but in actual sense restructuring debt does not mean writing off the debt because at times it means transferring from one creditor to another other,” he said.

He said this was meant to give breathing space to the country in order to have ample time to clear the debt.

Mr Kabimba said the economy was worsening every day and that there was need for Zambia to become a primary producer of goods.

He said he was shocked that the head of state was not following protocol and was even meeting individuals like the IMF Legal counsel who was too junior for him to deal with.

“In my time as a public servant, I have never seen a president allowing junior officers to see him,” he said.
