World Bank to support 35 poorest countries with scaled up production

AT least 35 Internatio­nal Developmen­t Associatio­n (IDA) are set to benefit through scaled up pro duction economic in clusion under the World Bank Group’s next three- year cycle of funding.

IDA is one of the largest and most effective plat forms for fighting extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries.

It is the part of the World Bank that helps the world’s 74 poorest countries and is the single largest source of donor funds for basic so cial services in these countries.

World Bank Zambia Country Manager, Sahr Kpundeh, this week an nounced that the group in its next three-year cy cle of funding had made specific commitment­s to support countries under its Human Capital Special Theme as well as the Gen der and Developmen­t Spe cial theme.

“We are committed to Scaling up productive eco nomic inclusion: Incorpo rate specific productive economic inclusion for women in at least 35 IDA social protection/jobs, agricultur­e, urban, and/ or community developmen­t projects,” Dr Kpun deh said in Lusaka at the launch of the Girls Educa tion and Women’s Empow erment and Livelihood­s (GEWEL) project.

He said the group had also committed to expand adaptive social protection and building resilience to shocks.

Dr Kpundeh stated that the group would support at least 20 IDA countries’ resilience by building adaptive social protection systems, including the use of digital technologi­es.

He mentioned increas ing support to prevention of and response to GBV as another area of commit ment from the group.

“We will support at least 10 IDA countries to strengthen national pol icy frameworks for pre vention of and response to GBV, and in at least 15 IDA countries… imple ment GBV prevention and response protocols as part of safe and inclusive edu cational institutio­ns,” he stated.

On the GEWEL Photo book, Dr Kpundeh said it was prepared in collabo ration with Government, and with support of Irish Aid and Government of Sweden to the GEWEL Bank Executed Multi-Do nor Trust Fund.
