SUCCESSION DISPUTES WORRY NORTH-WEST CHIEFS
TRADITIONAL leaders in North-Western Province say they are concerned with succession disputes among themselves.
The traditional leaders stated that succession dis putes in some chiefdoms have been outstanding for quite a long time resulting into derailment of development.
Speaking on behalf of oth er chiefs when Vice-Pres ident Mutale Nalumango called on them, Senior Chief Mujimanzonvu said the problem is when traditional matters are taken to court, royal establishments cannot have any hand to intervene.
“Our appeal is govern ment to see how it can be of help because this is derailing development, “said senior chief Mujimanzonvu.
He said traditional chiefs are failing to handle certain matters due to lack of resources.
He also called on govern ment to look into the plight of chiefs by expediting the process of constructing chiefs’ palaces.
He said most palaces are inhabitable thereby putting the lives of occupants at risk.
“The other challenge is the issue of transport, yes the previous government randomly helped their royal highnesses with transport, but I think the bigger seg ment of their royal highness es was left out,” he said.
He said most of their royal highnesses’ palaces are very far hence the need to help them with transport.
He also appealed to gov ernment to work on roads leading to chiefs’ palaces saying most of them are in a deplorable state.
And Ms Nalumango said government wants chiefs to be part of the development agenda so that there is con sensus on development.
