THE PF SHOULD HOLD A GENERAL CONFERENCE

-

Dear Editor,

THE former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) which has been engulfed in internal wrangles should hold its general conference to elect the party president ahead of the 2026 general election. The former ruling party has two factions; one led by former president Edgar Lungu and another one led by the embattled Matero Member of Parliament, Miles Bwalya Sampa.

Mr. Sampa has been at the centre of causing squabbles in the former ruling party. The embattled MP held an illegal general conference on October 24, 2023 at which he was purportedly elected as the PF leader.

If what Mr. Sampa did is not a political circus, then what is it? However, it is in public domain that Mr, Sampa has been sponsored by the United Party for National Development (UPND) to annihilate the former ruling party.

Moreover, Mr. Sampa has on several occasions taken the PF to court on trumped up charges in an attempt to hijack the former ruling party. This shows how desperate Mr. Sampa is to usurp power from the former ruling party. It is mind boggling that Mr. Sampa is aspiring for the presidency in the 2026 general election.

Yet, Mr. Sampa has failed to develop the Matero constituency. Matero constituency is yearning for development. This is very unfortunate to say the least.

Coming to the holding of the PF general conference, nine presidential candidates filed their nominations and paid the required fee of K200, 000 at the party secretariat.

However, the candidates contesting for the party presidency are Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, Brian Mundubile, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, Greyson Monde, and Miles Sampa. Others are Mutotwe Kafwaya, Goodward Mulubwa and Chishimba Kambwili.

The holding of the general conference has been postponed on many occasions. The holding of the general conference is the way to go. This is because the party leader will be respected by the general membership of the PF.

Lastly, the holding of the general conference is long overdue and it will ultimately foster peace and unity in the party.

ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.
