JCTR Ba­sic Needs Bas­ket aligned to fall­ing In­fla­tion

The Ba­sic Needs Bas­ket (BNB) for the month of Septem­ber has de­creased for a fam­ily of (5) liv­ing in the cap­i­tal city of Zam­bia, Lusaka.

The BNB for the month Septem­ber de­clined by 9.1% to ZMW4,883.57 from ZMW4,928.37 in Au­gust.

The de­crease was at­trib­uted to a de­crease in food items which in­clude; mealie meal re­duced from ZMW62.33 per 25 kg bag to ZMW59.85 per 25kg bag, Kapenta (Sar­dines) re­duced from ZMW202.8 per kg to ZMW184.78 per kg.

Fish re­duced from ZMW187.83 per kg to ZMW132.56 per kg. Other soft com­modi­ties like beans in­creased from ZMW26.87 per kg to ZMW30.57 per kg, tomato in­creased from ZMW8 per kg to ZMW7 per kg.

The amount re­quired to sus­tain a fam­ily of five is above the monthly salary for the low­est paid civil ser­vant work­ing in the govern­ment and less that the high­est paid civil ser­vant ac­cord­ing to re­vised pay hikes.

Jesuit Cen­tre for The­o­log­i­cal Re­flec­tion ( JCTR) a Catholic con­trolled civil or­ga­ni­za­tion re­minded govern­ment that the cost of liv­ing re­mains high as most peo­ple’s in­comes fall be­low the av­er­age BNB.

JCTR Me­dia and In­for­ma­tion Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Of­fi­cer, Tendai Poisana echoed the need for more mea­sures should be put in place for the bud­get theme to be re­al­ized. She urged pol­icy mak­ers to be more tar­get­ing in iden­ti­fy­ing ben­e­fi­cia­ries of the so­cial cash trans­fer and other so­cial pro­tec­tion mea­sures if the in­tended ben­e­fits have to be re­al­ized.
