JCTR Basic Needs Basket aligned to falling Inflation
The Basic Needs Basket (BNB) for the month of September has decreased for a family of (5) living in the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka.
The BNB for the month September declined by 9.1% to ZMW4,883.57 from ZMW4,928.37 in August.
The decrease was attributed to a decrease in food items which include; mealie meal reduced from ZMW62.33 per 25 kg bag to ZMW59.85 per 25kg bag, Kapenta (Sardines) reduced from ZMW202.8 per kg to ZMW184.78 per kg.
Fish reduced from ZMW187.83 per kg to ZMW132.56 per kg. Other soft commodities like beans increased from ZMW26.87 per kg to ZMW30.57 per kg, tomato increased from ZMW8 per kg to ZMW7 per kg.
The amount required to sustain a family of five is above the monthly salary for the lowest paid civil servant working in the government and less that the highest paid civil servant according to revised pay hikes.
Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection ( JCTR) a Catholic controlled civil organization reminded government that the cost of living remains high as most people’s incomes fall below the average BNB.
JCTR Media and Information Communication Officer, Tendai Poisana echoed the need for more measures should be put in place for the budget theme to be realized. She urged policy makers to be more targeting in identifying beneficiaries of the social cash transfer and other social protection measures if the intended benefits have to be realized.
