The Czech Development Agency - CDA has handed over the rehabilitated Siggubu Dam to the Monze district local community. The dam was financed within the framework of Czech Development Cooperation in Zambia.
The rehabilitation works were carried out by Czech company Ircon Ltd, whose head offices are in the Czech Republic. The company implements projects in the fields of water and sanitation, solid waste management, environmental management and education.
To deliver the project to the local community, Ircon worked in collaboration with Njovu Zambia, a non-governmental organisation, which works in collaboration with Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic and supported by the Czech Republic Development Cooperation.
The Dam whose wall collapsed two years ago has been rehabilitated at a total cost of US$130,000. Czech Republic Ambassador to Zambia Rabek Rubes said during the handover ceremony that the rehabilitation of the dam was done using funds from the Czech Development Agency - CDA.
Rubes said his country has a five-year running program in Zambia were financial support will be channelled towards supporting programs that aim at improving the water supply situation in the country.
The handover ceremony held on 14 March in Southern Province was attended by Deputy Permanent Secretary Kennedy Mubanga who thanked the Czech Republic for their continued financial support towards the uplifting of living standards for the Zambian people.
The Member of Parliament Kasauta Michelo for the area were the dam is located appealed to locals to ensure they safeguard the dam which will aid supply of water to local households and livestock like cattle herds which is the main economic activity of the region
