The name ‘SCAW’ is synonymous with ‘steel and iron’ product manufacture. In Africa’s mining giant Zambia demand for steel products has been on the rise and one company that has leveraged off this demand is Scaw Zambia Ltd. With an operation in Kitwe on the Copperbelt province of Zambia Scaw Limited has built itself a successful track record second to none. A little trip down memory lane SCAW is a foundry business established in 1960 and was originally owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. In the early 1980’s it became a subsidiary of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines - ZCCM. In 1998, the company was re-privatized and it is currently owned by private investors who work closely with a management team of professionals. SCAW hires 500 citizens in Kitwe a mining town on the Copperbelt. How SCAW has diversified its product range over the years The steel company has since its privatization, evolved to be one of the largest and well known manufacturers of high chrome and forged ball grinding media, iron and steel castings, and industrial gases. Since inception, SCAW used to supply grinding media and castings exclusively to the mining industry. Since re-privatization in 1998, SCAW has diversified its operations to include other mining related industries such as aggregate crushing, Lime and Cement plants. SCAW has recently installed a state of the art, automatically controlled, electrically heated, tempering furnace for manufacturing high quality hammer forged balls. The furnace ensures strict and automated control of tempering so as to ensure consistent achievement of release of stresses in the ball while keeping the desired microstructure and hardness. PRODUCTS Grinding Media SCAW manufactures various sizes of quality grinding media. It has set up one of the largest infrastructure to produce various grades of high and low chrome grinding media to international standards which specifically meet customer needs and specifications, treated to various hardening processes and size specifications. These include: forged ball, high/low balls, chrome, high/low chrome, cylpebs and low chrome mills. Gas plants – Oxygen and Acetylene SCAW has gas plants that manufacture industrial Oxygen and Acetylene gases that equal or exceed the expectations of our growing customer base. Strict quality control measures have been put in place to ensure manufacture of consistent and high quality industrial gases. Packaging and transportation facilities are provided to ensure the product is delivered in an environmentally friendly and safe manner. Ferrous and Manganese Castings SCAW manufactures ferrous and manganese castings to the mining and the general industry. These are supplied as cast or machined to the customer’s specification. Castings contract manufacturing range from smaller components to large jobbing works. The SCAW technical team provides support in design, in material selection and in performance improvement. We have set up one of the largest infrastructure to produce various grades of steel and iron castings to international standards which specifically include castings in low and high alloy steels, austenitic manganese steel, white cast iron, grey cast iron, low and high alloy cast iron up to 3.5tons single piece. Some of its castings include: mill, trunnion, mantle and bowl, jaw crusher plates, mill shell and mill end liners. Safety SCAW adheres to the highest safety standards in the interest of the environment, public health, safety and natural resources by seeking environmental excellence as a primary objective for all company operations and activities. The achievement of this objective is characterized by conducting operations in an environmentally sound manner with emphasis on continual improvement in safeguarding our environment. SCAW are situated on 1316 Dr Aggrey Ave, Heavy Industrial Area in Kitwe, Zambia. Enquiries can be channelled to: [email protected] , [email protected] and [email protected] .
