BULAWAYO, Friday, December 20, 1991 — A man who is suspected of stoning another man to death in Nkulumane, Bulawayo, during a quarrel over a bicycle, briefly appeared before a magistrate yesterday for confirmation of his warned and cautioned statement.

Mokejo Ndhlovu (37) was not formally charged when he appeared before Mr James Mutsauki at the Western Commonage Magistrates’ Courts.

He is to face a charge of murdering Cde Joseph Zambezi. He was remanded in custody to January 3.

The State alleges that Ndhlovu borrowed a bicycle from Cde Enwell Ncube while he was at Pazwa Shopping Centre in Nkulumane.

After using the bicycle, he returned to the shopping centre where he allegedly left the bicycle next to Cde Zambezi’s bicycle.

After sometime, Ndhlovu took away Cde Zambezi’s bicycle, mistaking it for the one he had borrowed and as he was pushing it away, Cde Zambezi confronted him and asked Ndhlovu why he was taking his bicycle.

A quarrel broke out and Cde Zambezi punched Ndhlovu on the nose and fled.

Ndhlovu hired an emergency taxi to help him pursue Cde Zambezi. When the taxi got closer to Cde Zambezi, Ndhlovu alighted, picked up a stone and struck Cde Zambezi at the back of the head.

Cde Zambezi fell and Ndhlovu is alleged to have hit Cde Zambezi’s head on the tarmac until he died.
