SHABANIE Mine left-back Ricky Bota (21) was crowned the Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) Player of the Year at an awards ceremony held at Nichrut Lodge in Shurugwi on Sunday.

The former Zimbabwe Under-20 international had a terrific season, helping the asbestos miners win the region’s championship. His Shabanie Mine side, however, still don’t know whether they will automatically play Premiership football in 2017 or be involved in a promotional play-off, as Zifa and the PSL are embroiled in a bitter dispute over the promotion and relegation issue.

The PSL wants only two teams promoted, while Zifa wants winners of its four regional leagues to get a ticket to the PSL, thereby increasing the league to 18 teams.

For his efforts, Bota received a trophy and $100 in prize money. Ivan Hoe striker Collen Moyo was the first runner-up and veteran defender Zvenyika Makonese of Shabanie Mine was the second runner-up.

Moyo also collected the golden boot for his 13 goals, while Farai Mususunye, who was with MSU up to June, was second with eight goals.

Championship winning Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni was named Coach of the Year and Blanket Mine’s Ephraim Moyo claimed the most disciplined player award. Lloyd Mapanje was voted Referee of the Year. Bota said he expected to win the award and paid tribute to his teammates and technical team for their support.

“I feel honoured that people at least appreciate my talent. This has been one of my best years since I started playing football and I would like to give credit to my coach and my teammates,” said Bota.

The Zimbabwe Under-23 trialist was, however, mum on his future, saying he would wait to hear from his manager.

Speaking during the awards event, CSL chairman Stanley Chapeta said they were working to ensure the awards ceremony become a permanent feature on the region’s calendar. Pote Holdings general manager Tamson Mthombeni attended the event and pledged his support for the region.
