BULAWAYO, Wednesday, March 8, 1967 — Rhodesia Railways are working on proposal that will enable passengers from Victoria Falls and Livingstone to arrive in Bulawayo in time to board connecting trains for South Africa and Lourenco Marques, says a Railways statement issued yesterday.
Full details are to be given when the arrangements are completed. The statement says that diesel rail cars are operating exclusively between Salisbury and Umtali, and to ensure continuity of service, not only for the benefit of the public, but for the Hotels’s Associationand tourists, the Railways have agreed that the rail car service will not be altered before June 30,1967.
The most advantageous use of the rail cars over the Railways system is constantly under consideration, and within this general context, their possible use between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo will receive consideration, says the statement.
Passengers travelling from Salisbury to South Africa and Lourenco Marques by rail need not worry about missing their connections at Bulawayo.
A Rhodesia Railways spokesman said yesterday that, on average, passenger trains from Salisbury were running only 14 minutes late, giving passengers ample time to catch their connections.
Rhodesia Railways announced on Monday that trains from Bulawayo to South Africa would not be delayed to connect with mail trains running from Ndola and Salisbury. But so far, no passengers from Salisbury have been affected and it is unlikely they will be.
While trains from Salisbury arrive anything from four minutes to 38 minutes late — due to track relaying — trains from Zambia have frequently been running five hours late. The spokesman said the Salisbury train was often on time, despite delays caused by the work on the track.
