OBEY Makamure, popularly known as Tocky Vibes, who rose to fame with his hit song Amai, can be said to be one of the big Zimdancehall artists in Zimbabwe.
Born on November 29, 1993, Tocky was raised in the Rugare suburb of Harare. He did his primary education at Rugare Primary and his high school at Kambuzuma 1 High. It was then that he started his musical career in 2008.
Although he grew up in the ghetto of Rugare, Tocky would occasionally visit his rural home in Madamombe, Chivi area in Masvingo where he eventually started residing until 2012. He believes that his constant visits to Chivi and the type of parental guidance he got groomed him to be the kind of man he is as well as the type of lyrics he writes.
Because of his touching lyrics, Tocky has produced a number of songs in the form of singles and albums.
He has a number of albums which include Tirabhuru aka Kwata Zonke and Toti Toti. He has done collaborations with a number of artistes such as Bethany Pasinawako, Kadhija, Jah Signal, Spider Man, Sandra Ndebele and Pah Chihera to mention but a few.
Tocky made a rapid rise in the music circles with the release of Amai which led him to sign an endorsement deal with Savannah Tobacco, which can be said to be one of his greatest achievements. Since 2012, he has travelled a number of countries including the United Kingdom and South Africa.
He is full time into music and when asked if there are any other things he does besides music, Tocky jokingly said: “Besides music, I do music”.
After his successful work in the music industry, Tocky has won a couple of awards which include three Zimdancehall awards and the Zimbabwe Music Awards People’s Choice Award in 2014. — JiveZimbabwe
