A forgiving heart

-

Colossians 3 vs 13 (NIV)

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

So many times we are confronted by unpleasant events that leave us scarred and traumatised and often we hold on to these private memories of past hurt and pain. We cling on to them in the belief that they cannot be shared or the fact that people will judge us if we tell them.

We hold on to every harsh word that has ever been spoken to us and we tell ourselves that forgiveness is not an option. We relive every unkind action that was done to us and hold the people who made us hurt in utter contempt.

Yet amid it all we sometimes forget that we are also humans and we are capable of doing the very things that we dislike in others. We hurt beyond measure but in the midst of the pain we need to remember that we are all called to forgive. We are called to allow for new beginnings that enable us to live as God intended; in the glory of His love that is all encompassing, following in His example by turning the other cheek.

So many lives have been destroyed all because people have chosen to hold on to the past with all its detrimental effects yet we are asked to live by the principle of forgiving as we have been forgiven. Whatever bondage we may find ourselves in, may we surrender it to the Lord and may He in turn liberate us and allow us to live our best lives today.

Be blessed.
