Top Byo swimmers for Mat’land gala
TOP city swimmers are expected at the Bulawayo City Pool for the Matabeleland Amateur Swimming Gala this evening.
The swimmers are from local clubs Petra Swimming Academy, Zambezi Tigers, Barracudas, Falcon, Crusaders, School of Swimming, Dolphins and Penguins.
Junior and senior swimmers will take to the pool in an attempt to secure qualifying times for the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone 4 championships to be held in South Africa this year.
CANA is the African mother body for swimming and Zone 4 comprises southern African countries that include Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Matabeleland Swimming Board press and liaison officer Thomas Werrett said they expect a competitive pool with swimmers out to improve their times ahead of the African showpiece.
“We expect the meet to be very competitive. The gala will offer swimmers a chance to improve their times from last year. We’re excited with the level of competition we have witnessed of late and we urge aquatic sport lovers to come and cheer the young swimmers, whom we believe will one day represent the country proudly at regional and international events,” said Werret.
Swimmers will take part in multiple events, including the 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke and 800m freestyle. — @innocentskizoe
