A MAN was run over by a haulage truck after he tried to jump onto its trailer while it was in motion.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the man, who has not yet been identified, sustained head injuries and died on the spot.

He said the accident occurred along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road in Filabusi on Monday at around 12 noon.

“I can confirm that we recorded an incident where a man died on the spot after he was run over by haulage truck. The 30 tonne truck was travelling to Masvingo along the MasvingoMbalabala Road towing a trailer.

“When the driver reached the 196 kilometre peg in Filabusi, a man who was standing at a bus-stop tried to jump onto the rear trailer of the haulage truck while it was moving at a slow speed. He failed to hold onto the trailer, slipped and fell to the ground. The wheels of the trailer ran over him and he died on the spot,” Chief Insp Ndebele said.

He said the matter was reported to the police who attended the scene. He urged members of the public to exercise caution and avoid stunts that could cost their lives.

“As police we would like to urge members of the public to exercise caution whenever necessary. Yes accidents happen but let’s not be negligent in order to curb many of them from happening. It’s not proper for one to board a moving vehicle no matter what speed it’s in. Passengers have to wait for vehicles to come to a halt and board them properly,” Chief Insp Ndebele said.—@DubeMatutu
