SANDY REINVENTS SELF

- Tendai Mapfumo

MULTI-TALENTED artiste Sandra “Sandy” Ndebele is still going strong, more than 20 years into her arts career.

The dancer-cum-musician continues to show growth, strength, resilience and longevity as she embanks on yet another insightful journey.

The Bulawayo-bred entertainer is now in her second year after enrolling with the Midlands State University for a Bachelor of Social Sciences Music Business, Musicology and Technology Honours undergraduate degree programme.

In an interview with H-Metro, Sandy said education is the most important ingredient for a successful and constructive life.

“Education is very important especially to most of us in the music industry.

“I suppose if we were all educated or given an opportunity to educate ourselves, we would be way better than what we are now,” she said.

The energetic performer, who embarked on her solo career in the 2000s with her hit singles Malaika and Mama, said she has a lot to be proud of as an artiste.

Asked about her proud moments in her career, she said:

“It was when I directed a group of girls called Intombi Zomntangala and I made them tour England, Russia and Germany from nowhere and winning the Best Student International Drama Festival when we were in England.

“I will never forget that day, I was so proud of myself because I also shocked myself.”

The mother of three said she was humbled after learning that she had become an inspiration to everyone, especially in the music industry due to her understanding of the arts industry.

Talking from her experience in the industry, Sandy said artistes need to have a plan, know who they are and what they want.

“We need to treat music as an industry so that we will be able to monetise it.

“Strategise, come up with a work plan and articulate it by performing, but without the plan and the structure and you not showing yourself where you are coming from and where you are going, you will come out with nothing,” she added.
