- Paul Pindani in CHINHOYI

CHINHOYI HIGH SCHOOL received a major Covid-19 boost when the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) donated PPE to the school last Friday.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the school, Professor Obert Jiri from the Department of Research and Innovation Directorate at UZ said they were striving to preserve the country’s health and at the same time also trying to control the stem of the pandemic by various interventions, hence the donation to Chinhoyi High School

He said they had brought the donation because of an important happening, that happened in the country and the world over in the form of Covid-19.

Prof Jiri said it was a great pleasure that the higher learning institution had donated to the school

He said they came to the school with a purpose of handing over the PPE to the school because the pandemic has affected every aspect of life; be it politically, economically and socially.

“So now we have what we call a new normal, where we sit one metre apart and so forth. So, we cannot ignore the impact that Covid-19 has brought to us. As an institution of higher learning, we really strive to preserve our country’s health and also trying to control Covid-19 by various interventions,” said Prof Jiri.

He said the university had gone through real transformation, where it was now producing goods and services.

“Some of you might have heard about Education 5.0, where we are saying let’s produce goods and services. These goods and services are the anchor of our education at the university,” said Prof Jiri.

He added: “So, in the past, you would find one would learn to get a degree, but now we say even if you get your degrees, you should be able to produce something that is helpful to the economy and the country.”

He said the university was now teaching students to be able to produce goods and services.

Makonde District School Inspector, Ezara Kafumu thanked the university for the timely donation to the school.

“The donation has come at the right time to protect you as learners. So make sure you do the right thing. Government alone cannot provide adequate materials. So, I would like to thank the university for being our rescuer in bringing this donation,” Kafumu said.

Chinhoyi High School was hard hit by the novel coronavirus five months ago, when more than 70 learners got infected.
