BEACH VOLLEYBALL ENDORSED

- Shelly Guni

COACH of newly-formed Beach Volleyball team Zambezi Amazons, Robert Njerere, says they aim to support and promote the girl child in sport.

Njerere was saying this at a handover ceremony of kit worth US$800 by online clothing shop - Premium clothing.

The team is set to partake in a number of tournaments regionally and internationally.

Based at Old Hararians Sports Club, the team is made up of the coach, team manager Coleen Nyamurarwa and two players Nyengeterai Guyo and Vuyiswa Dhlomo.

“Our ambition is to promote the girl child for now because it’s a ladies team. To help them support and grow in the sport. But more importantly we want them to go and take part in as many regional and international tournaments as they can.”

In July, the team is expected to leave for some tournament in Rwanda followed by Bulgaria, from there they will travel to Slovenia.

“As a club one of our goals is not only to compete but have them enjoy and appreciate the benefit that comes with sport in general.

The former national team coach believes sport is unifying, recreational and can bring people together.

They are looking forward to recruiting more players in the future so that the game continues.

“In terms of plans for the future we hope to grow by recruiting young female players into the club and training them so that when the current team of Vuyiswa and Nyenge eventually calls time out, the Zambezi Amazons will continue in sport.”

Njerere went on to give credit to Premium Clothing for the donation of the kit.

“We are humbled by the gesture considering that in Zimbabwe things are difficult for you to get support let alone you getting a company to bring in sport equipment; it has helped us to kick start our plans.

“Premium clothing came in at the right time when we are still struggling to identify where we can get authentic beach volleyball attire, we would like to thank them,” he said.

Premium Clothing managing director Farai Shoko said they are delighted to present the Zambezi Amazons Beach Volleyball team with the playing kit sponsorship package for the 2021 season.

This is not the first time they have partnered with a sports team.

In 2019 during the Vitality Netball World Cup, Premium clothing donated shoes to the Zimbabwe Netball team - Gems.

“This commitment is a response to a plea for assistance ahead of their coming beach volleyball season and tours. Given the sensitive nature of Beach Volleyball playing kits, and the testimonies we have heard from the players, we felt obligated to provide the team with adequate playing kit and match day essentials for the whole season.

“The value of this sponsorship package is over USD800. This obligation is driven by two elements.

“Our CSR Programme. Our Corporate Social Responsibility has a strong focus on women empowerment, particularly in sport. In the past, we provided match day essentials for the Women’s Netball National Team ahead of their world cup campaign in Liverpool.

“Our Conscience. Guided by our conscience, we would like to commit to sponsoring the Zambezi Amazons with adequate and appropriate match day essentials on a long-term arrangement.”
