Chinhoyi sets up vaccination centre at market
THE municipality has set up a vaccination centre at Garikai Market to mitigate the impact of Covid-19.
There has been a public outcry over congestion at the market as residents fear the place could end up being a super spreader of the scourge.
Following an article by H-Metro that the market had become a hotspot for Covid-19, the local authority swiftly reacted by setting up the vaccination centre that will see farmers, buyers and residents getting vaccinated.
Council public relations spokesperson Tichaona Mlauzi told H-Metro that the local authority had opened the market as a vaccination centre, operating during the working hours.
He said the Garikai vegetable market was located in
Gadzema, adjacent to the council library.
“We would like to encourage our farmers and people who come to get their vegetables and the wholesale
market to get vaccinated,” said Mlauzi.
He added: “In doing this, we have considered people who will be at the market during that period, such that they get vaccinated and continue with their business.”
Mlauzi urged residents around the market place to utilise the facility. Chinhoyi Mayor councillor Garikai Dendera told H-Metro that the opening of the vaccination centre at the vegetable market was in line with the Government’s call of mass vaccination.
“As council, we are complementing Government’s efforts in the fight against Covid-19 cases which have been on the increase,” said Dendera.
He appealed to the residents of the town and the surrounding areas to get vaccinated at their nearby health centres.
Former Chinhoyi mayor, Test Michaels welcomed the move by the local authority saying it showed council had the residents at heart.
“This is a clear sign that council values the health aspect of its residents. It’s a very welcome move,” said Michaels.
