Donata registers personal best

- Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWEAN swimmer, Donata Katai, says she is happy with her performance despite missing out on the next round of the women’s 100-meter backstroke at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Donata swam her personal best time - 1:02:73 - to win her heat at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre but failed to make it into the first 16 ranking.

Speaking after the race, Donata credits the performance to the training and preparations she has done prior to the competition.

The 17-year-old said she had to focus on the race to ease pressure that comes with being surrounded by the world’s best.

“I am really happy with the time I swam,” said Donata.

“I think that goes down to all the training I have done over the years for this event. With all the pressure here in Tokyo, being around the best Olympians in the world, I think staying calm and focusing on the swimming was the best,” she said.

Her coach Lindsy Tudor Cole also showered her with praise.

She said the teenager has done well considering the magnitude of Olympic games.

“She (Donata) handled it perfectly even with the magnitude and pressure of the Olympic games, so well done Donata,” said Cole.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, in a Facebook Post yesterday, said Donata has made the nation proud and her future is bright.

They, however, announced it is sad that the swimmer will not proceed to the next round after failing to make the first 16 ranking.

“Congratulations on your spirited performance Donata!!! The Nation is super proud of you.

“Donata performed her personal best in a time of 1:02:73. Sadly, she did not make it in the first 16 ranking. Sadly, she will not be proceeding to the next round.

“What a great start to a Your world performance - The future is very Bright,” said ZOC.
