EIGHT people were killed in two separate accidents which occurred in Bulawayo and Harare yesterday.

A commuter omnibus, which was heading towards Bulawayo City Centre from Pumula, is said to have shot through a red traffic light and collided with a truck near Nkulumane Complex, killing six people on the spot. Seventeen people were aboard the kombi. Police National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said: “The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the intersection of Masiyephambili and Khami Road today at 0500 hours where six people died while 11 others were injured,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

“A non-ZUPCO Toyota Hiace kombi, with 17 occupants, went through a red robot and rammed into a moving truck before it was trapped between the horse and trailer and dragged for about 30 metres.”

In Harare, two people died on the spot, while three others were injured after a Honda Fit they were travelling in was hit by a train at the Chiremba Road level crossing in Hillside.

“Yes, I can confirm that two people died this morning along Chiremba Road after a Honda Fit vehicle was hit by a train.

“Three people were injured and, as police, we are urging motorists to be cautious when crossing rail,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

The injured were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.

“It is so sad, this car was coming from Epworth, but the driver failed to stop and there was a train coming,” said one eyewitness.

Another eyewitness said: “I was coming from my routine training and I heard a loud bang, that is when I rushed here and saw these people lying down.”
