Husband demands, gets maintenance

- Natasha Mbewe

A HARARE man dragged his former wife to court claiming $100 000 maintenance for the upkeep of their three children.

John Gumbo told the court he wanted his ex-wife, only identified as Cynthia, to help him take care of their children.

“I want $100 000 from her to help in the upkeep of the children.

“I am self-employed and sometimes do not get money that sustains us for the whole month.”

In response, Cynthia offered nothing, saying she was taking care of the other child she lived with.

“I used to help, but I stopped when he told the children to stop using the things I buy because I would have bewitched them.

“I even used to visit and wash their clothes, but he threatened to kill me if he sees me.”

However, John rejected Cynthia’s accusations.

“She is lying, but what is important right now is for her to help me take care of the children.”

Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Cynthia to pay $40 000 for the upkeep of the children.
