Man offers $15K maintenance

A HARARE man yesterday shocked his former wife after offering her $15 000 for the upkeep of their seven-year-old child.

Edson Rusere said he can only pay school fees once his ex-wife, Mollen Tavengwa, provides proof that the child is attending school.

“My offer is $15 000 and I will only pay school fees when she provides evidence that the child is attending school.

“We agreed that the child should go to school, but when I visited the school, I was told that the child is not at school,” he said

In response, Tavengwa turned down the offer, arguing that $15 000 was too little to cater for the child’s welfare.

“I do not accept the offer because that amount is not enough.

“For someone working in Harare, he should pay up to $50 000,” she said.

Tavengwa said she transferred the child to a rural school she can afford.

“What evidence does he need for a child who is in Grade 2.

“I transferred the child to a school in the rural areas so that I can farm while taking care of the child,” she said.

Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Rusere to pay $30 000, plus school fees, for the child.
