Met dept teaches the 30-30 lighting rule

THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned that lightning can even strike when clouds are distant, which is a scientific phenomenon called lightning from the blue.

In a weather update report, the MSD said it might not be safe to be outdoors even when lightning seems to be distant.

“The rough rule of noting the safe zone when you see lightning is the 30-30 Rule.

"If you see lightning and cannot count up to 30 seconds before you hear thunder, then you are not safe from the next lightning strike,” said the department.

“If caught in the open, please avoid sheltering under isolated trees or in isolated sheds as these tend to be natural lightning conductors.

“When a thunderstorm is brewing, go inside a house or large building. “Where possible install lightning conductors on buildings.”

The department said isolated thunder showers are expected in the north of the main watershed as well as the Eastern Highlands.

The southern parts of the country will have some light showers, which may be thundery.
