Vendor hauls ex-hubby to court

- Natasha Mbewe

A VEGETABLE vendor yesterday hauled her ex-husband to court demanding $400 000 maintenance for their two minor children.

Raramai Chingawo accused her former husband, Naigel Nhavira, of neglecting the welfare of his children despite having the means to take care of them.

“He earns more than US$270 plus another salary in local currency, but he is deliberately neglecting his responsibilities.

“I told him I am not able to stay with him anymore because I was tired of his abuse, but he is silencing me now,” she said.

Chingawo also told the court that she was merely a vendor who was struggling to make ends meet.

In response, Naigel offered $100 000.

“Everything she is saying is a lie because I caught her cheating and she moved out.

“I am the one staying with our first-born child and I want to apply for custody of the other children.

“I am the one who has been paying their fees, buying clothes and uniforms.

“I do not have a problem with doing all these things for my children, but I want them under my care,” he said.

Presiding magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Nigel to pay $100 000 per month and continue paying fees.
