PSL discuss low attendance figures

PREMIER Soccer League club bosses will meet for an extraordinary general meeting in Bulawayo tomorrow to review the just-ended season and to plan for next year.

The meeting comes on the eve of the Chibuku Super Cup final pitting first-timers Bulawayo Chiefs and Herentals.

With the two clashing at Barbourfields, the PSL Board of Governors will not be in a hurry to finish the EGM like they did in 2019 when they held the meeting on the morning of the Chibuku Super Cup final between Highlanders and Ngezi Platinum Stars.

PSL chief executive, Kennedy Ndebele, confirmed tomorrow’s meeting.

“It’s basically to review the season and make provisional preparations for 2023.

“On provisional preparations for 2023, we will look at the provisional season start date, and induction workshops with all the 18 clubs’ representatives. “We will look at Club Licensing, fan attendance and the effects of Covid-19,” said Ndebele.

The PSL resumed after hard Covid-19 lockdowns with the Chibuku Super Cup played in a round robin format.

When the league returned in November last year, stadiums were only allowed 30 percent of their carrying capacity.

But, that did not present a headache, as fewer and fewer fans attended matches as the season progressed.

Maybe, the PSL might have to borrow a leaf from Division One, which attracted more fans to its matches than most top-flight matches.

Only Highlanders attracted sizable crowds at Barbourfields.

Harare City, Bulawayo City, Tenax and Whawha have been relegated and are being replaced by Simba Bhora (Northern Region), Hwange (Southern Region), Green Fuels (Eastern Region) and Central Region’s Sheasham.
