Mushekwi fifth in Golden Boot race

NYASHA MUSHEKWI is now among the leading five players in the race for the Golden Boot in the Chinese Super League.

His club, Zhejiang Greentown, have also benefited from his goal-scoring instincts as they are now in fourth place in the championsh­ip race.

Greentown have picked 43 points, from their 25 matches, and are 19 points adrift of leaders Shandong Tiashan.

Wuhan Three Lions are in second place on 59 points while Shanghai Port are third on 49 points.

Mushekwi has scored in 13 league matches this season.

Brazil’s Marcao is leading the Golden Boot race with 20 goals, followed by his countrymen, Cryzan (18) and Davidson (15).

China’s Yuning Zhang (15) is in fourth place. Mushekwi smashed two, a week ago, in a sixgoal thriller against Cangzhou Mighty Lions, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Such has been the 35-year-old’s form of late that he has scored seven goals in the last nine games and now sits on a total of 13 league goals in 23 games this season. There are nine games still to play in the championsh­ip race.

Mushekwi is the key man at Greentown, having scored 23 last season, as the club won promotion from the Chinese League One.

He is also now the club’s all-time top scorer despite having joined three years ago.

Since leaving his homeland to play in the PSL at Sundowns, Mushekwi has been on double figures on nine occasions playing in South Africa, Sweden, and China.

He scored 15 goals in his first season at Sundowns then 19 in his second before dropping to six in his third after which he was frozen out at Chloorkop for the next season before leaving for Belgium.

From 2015 to 2019 he was in double numbers on the scoring charts playing in Sweden where he went on to reach double numbers for Djurgarden­s IF and then Dalian Profession­al in China. Sports
